From The New Republic ’s very own Spine, Martin Peretz : I apologize to my readers and to Liza Minnelli for quoting from Tunku Varadarajan’s otherwise estimable column about John McCain a remark slighting to her and her gifts. Minnelli has been a talented singer and actress for several decades, and she still has the the warranted courage to perform. What’s more, she is one of those paradigmatic entertainers who gives of herself–her ample brain and enchanting personality–in the cause of human rights, a cause not as popular as it once was was

Wow, they still write articles like this : It has been a very strange season in the political career of John McCain. The former maverick who once fought his own party on everything from tax cuts to torture, who built a reputation as a prickly independent, now marches in lockstep with his party, from his objection to Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court appointment to his support of a draconian new immigration law in Arizona that would have repulsed him three years ago. When Newsweek asked him whether a maverick would take such positions, he responded that he’d never considered himself a maverick.

Jon Stewart’s research team at The Daily Show do a patriotic service by pointing out that weaning America off of Middle Eastern oil is not some brave new Barack Obama initiative, but rather a four-decade long unkept presidential promise. Check it out: The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c An Energy-Independent Future www.thedailyshow.com Daily Show Full Episodes Political Humor Tea Party What Stewart doesn’t do, and what few people from (for lack of a better word) the Stewartian Universe do, is really attempt to answer the question he poses in the headline. (Alhough he did end in a nauseating if familiar flourish of celebrating Richard Nixon as a glorious regulator, thankfully Stewart did not go to the usual playbook on this question, which is to vaguely blame it all on the omnipotence of evil oil companies.) This is what really irritates me about the following sentiment, uttered this week by the president of the United States : Time and again, the path forward has been blocked — not only by oil industry lobbyists, but also by a lack of political courage and candor. What’s irritating is not the need for the candor, which is real, but of the quality of its contents, which is lacking.

It’s been a good year for strange political ads . But I’m not sure I’ve seen anything that outweirds this effort (warning: not really safe for work) that the Anarchist Pogo Party put together in Germany five years back : The German public broadcasting network ARD was apparently required by law to air the ad uncensored. Now there’s a country that takes its equal time rules seriously.

Steve Smith (not pictured) is a mild-mannered bankruptcy lawyer from Los Angeles, California. He is loyal to his friends, fanatical about his sports, and lefty about his politics, though (being from L.A., after all) ideology isn’t the end-all of his life, and he enjoys reading those with whom he disagrees. Back when I had a backyard, he enjoyed a beverage around the fire on multiple occasions, interrogating Andrew Breitbart about Steve Garvey’s forearms, and occasionally threatening to be “the Eric Alterman of Ken Layne and the Corvids .” Hit & Run regulars may know Steve as a guy who drops by from time to time to hassle me about this or that, but most likely they know him as the dude who, whenever he shows up, activates some crazy, multi-author all-caps meme by other commenters, along the lines of ” STEVE SMITH LOVE OUTDOOR SPORTS! HIKING, LIVING IN CAVE, PICKUP BASEBALL GAME WITH HIKER SKULL, AND RAPE! ” Now, that’s not very friendly (the backstory for this puzzling, sasquatch-flavored meme is referenced about halfway down this post ), but he takes it all in good stride

One of the horribly fascinating things about following the real estate market from 2006 until, well, today actually, has been watching how long the body managed to keep running and twitching after the head was blown clean off.
